PF Flyers 11U wins tournament again
Down one run in the bottom of the fifth inning of the championship game of the Tournaments for a Cause Halloween Frenzy, Colton Rash ripped a three-run triple to spark a six-run inning and lead the PF Flyers 11U to a tournament victory for the second straight weekend.
The Flyers went 4-0 in the tournament.
The team began the fifth trailing 8-5. Jack Wilson led the inning off with a single. He stole second and scored on a single by Isaac Mahle. Max Roberts and Tim Finley singled to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Mahle to make it 8-7. Ryan Edwards walked to re-load the bases, setting up Rash’s big hit.
Carter Cassady added an insurance run with a two-out RBI single and then picked up the win on the mound with two innings pitched and no earned runs allowed.
Wilson, Mahle and Roberts were each 2-for-3 in the championship game, an 11-8 win. Each scored two runs. Mahle drove in two runs. Roberts drove in one.
Caleb Shaffer started the game on the mound and went four innings, allowing three runs and striking out four.
The Flyers advanced to the championship game after Bronx Debert and Shaffer combined for a gem on the mound.
The pair went six innings, allowing only two hits and one run in a 3-1 win. Debert earned the win, going 4 2/3 innings pitched, striking out four and allowing one run. Shaffer earned the save. He went 1 1/3 innings pitched and didn’t allow a baserunner. He threw 20 pitches, 15 were strikes.
Offensively, the Flyers scored all three of their runs and had four of their six hits in the third inning.
Rash led the inning off with a single. Chase Collins doubled Rash home for the first run of the game. Bear Shank singled to add a run, and two outs later Wilson singled to score Shank and make it 3-0.
That was enough for Shaffer and Debert.
The Flyers cruised in pool play, scoring 25 runs and pitching two shutouts.
Cassady, Edwards and Debert each pitched a scoreless inning in the first game of pool play. Cassady allowed the only hit.
Meanwhile, the Flyers pounded out 10 hits and scored 15 runs in three innings. Wilson and Finley each went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Wilson scored two runs, and Finley scored three.
Peyton Johnson had a double. Debert, Roberts and Edwards each hit triples.
The Flyers again teamed up for a one-hitter in the second game of pool play. Johnson and Roberts each pitched one inning. Finley pitched two innings, allowing the only hit and striking out three.
Finley went 2-for-3. The Flyers took advantage of eight errors.
Finley hit .545 for the tournament with six runs scored. Debert pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing only one run and striking out six.
The Flyers are now 11-3 and finish their fall season this weekend at the Ripken Experience Pigeon Forge.
