PF Flyers 11U wins Fight for the Flag Fall Tournament Championship
After going 0-2 in pool play this weekend, the PF Flyers 11U team roared back in bracket play. The Flyers won both Sunday games, allowing only two runs, to earn the Tournaments for a Cause Fight for the Flag Fall Tournament Championship.
Flyers pitchers allowed only seven hits in 12 innings on Sunday.
Caleb Shaffer led the way with an efficient five innings pitched on only 43 pitches in the championship game. Shaffer allowed three hits and no walks, striking out three.
Ryan Edwards closed out both Sunday games. He allowed no hits or walks in two innings.
Bronx Debert pitched 4 2/3 innings in the semifinal, allowing two hits, one unearned run and striking out five.
Saturday started rough for the Flyers. The team fell behind 5-0 in the first game of pool play before losing 15-7. Peyton Johnson and Isaac Mahle were each 2-for-3 in that game with two runs scored. Mahle added a pair of RBI and Johnson had one RBI.
The Flyers lost the second pool play game 12-7. Tim Finley led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
But the Flyers came out ready to play on Sunday.
Johnson led the game off with a single to center. Jack Wilson and Mahle walked. Finley grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice to make the score 1-0. One out later, Colton Rash hit a two-run single.
The Flyers added a run in the third on an RBI single by Max Roberts and one in the fourth on an RBI single by Bear Shank.
Meanwhile, Debert was in command. He allowed only one baserunner per inning through the first three innings.
Roberts finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI. Wilson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rash was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Flyers held on to win 12-2.
In the championship game, the Flyers again jumped out in front in the first inning. Johnson tripled to start the game. Wilson scored him on an RBI groundout. Later in the inning, Roberts singled to score Mahle and make it 2-0.
The Flyers added on in the third on RBI singles by Mahle and Roberts.
Shaffer and the Flyers defense were locked in.
Two hitters reached base in the third. One was caught stealing on a throw from Roberts to Edwards. The second was caught stealing on a pickoff to first with Finley throwing to Edwards to end the inning. The Flyers ended the fifth inning by turning a line out double play.
Edwards pitched the sixth inning and after a runner reached on an error, the Flyers turned a line out double play to end the game when Chase Collins caught a line drive and doubled the runner off first to end the game with a 4-0 Flyers win and the tournament championship.
Johnson hit .615 in the tournament with three doubles and a triple. He scored seven runs. Finely hit .545 with a double and seven runs. Roberts hit .500 with eight RBI. Mahle hit .500 with seven runs scored.
The Flyers are now 7-3 on the fall with two tournament championships.
