PF Flyers 11U wins K Sports Fall Ball Tournament
PF Flyers 11U pitcher Bronx Debert stranded the tying run at third with only one out in the top of the sixth inning to preserve an 8-7 win and help the Flyers earn the K Sports Fall Ball Tournament championship on Saturday.
The Flyers went 5-1 in the tournament, which was spread over three weekends.
In the championship, the Flyers fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but the team scored two in the bottom of the first and never relinquished the lead. With one out, Jack Wilson and Isaac Mahle singled. Both came around to score.
The Flyers added two runs in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by Carter Cassady and Ryan Edwards.
Meanwhile, Caleb Shaffer and Debert combined to go six innings, allowing only three earned runs. Debert struck out four in four innings.
Wilson was 2-for-2 in the championship game with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Cassady was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Flyers advanced to the championship after an 11-0 semifinal win. Cassady earned the win on the mound. He went three shutout innings, walking three and striking out five.
Max Roberts was 2-for-3 in the game with five RBI.
The Flyers went 3-1 in pool play.
Pool play began with a 9-6 win. The Flyers managed only two hits, but they worked nine walks and took five hit by pitches. Shaffer earned the win. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing only one hit and two earned runs. He struck out four.
The Flyers earned a second win in pool play by jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Ryan Edwards led the game off with a single. Cassaday scored Edwards on a fielder’s choice. Mahle and Tim Finley followed that up with RBI doubles. Silas Lincoln hit an RBI single and eventually scored.
That was all the offense Roberts and Debert needed. The pair pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out 10.
Lincoln was 2-for-2 with four stolen bases, three runs scored, a walk and an RBI.
The second weekend of pool play started with a 13-1 win. Shaffer and Edwards pitched four innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out six.
The Flyers pounded out 10 hits.
Mahle was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored, a walk and an RBI. Roberts was 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI. Colton Rash was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
The Flyers lone loss came when the team gave up a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning of the second pool play game. The Flyers lost 7-6.
Roberts was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored in the game. Mahle and Wilson each added doubles.
The Flyers are now 5-1 on the fall.
