PF Flyers American 13U wins Dinger De Mayo at Action Sports

PF Flyers American 13U won the Dinger De Mayo tournament at the Action Sports Center on Sunday by going 4-0 with three run-rule wins, including a 14-4 win in the championship.

The Flyers outscored their opponents 41-11 in the four games.

In the championship, the Flyers pounded out 12 hits, led by Brayden Hornsby, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Logan Kramer went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Cooper Berlin pitched a four-inning complete game, allowing three hits and no earned runs. He struck out four.

The Flyers started pool play on Saturday with a pitcher’s duel. Logan Walters allowed one run on three hits in 1 1/3 innings. Then Luke Herbert came in and pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Herbert threw only 58 pitches. He struck out three and earned the win.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth. Thomas Gruber worked a one-out walk. Parker Kuhr walked as well. Gruber ended up stealing home and an error by the catcher sent Kuhr to third. He scored on a groundout by Walters to give the Flyers the 4-2 lead. Herbert kept the score there for the win.

That proved to be the only close game the Flyers played.

They scored seven in the first inning of their 13-3 win in the second game of pool play. The Flyers had five hits in that inning, including a two-run single by Caden Higginbotham and an RBI double by Eli Greenlee.

Berlin and Gruber each drove in three in that game.

The two wins earned the Flyers the top seed and a first-round bye.

Hornsby pitched the Flyers to the win in the semifinal, throwing a five-inning complete game, allowing four hits and no earned runs. Ten of the Flyers 12 hitters had at least one hit in the game. Hornsby, Connor Bitler, Josh Codner, Walters and Gruber all had triples.

That set up the championship game.

The Flyers did not allow an earned run on Sunday.

The Flyers are now 15-4-1. This was their third tournament championship.
