PF Flyers 10U wins first championship of 2024
The PF Flyers 10U team won its first tournament of 2024, winning the Wins for Wishes tournament put on by Tournaments for a Cause.
The Flyers went 4-0 on the weekend and have now won six straight games.
The Flyers used a six-run third inning to come from behind in the championship game, and the team held on to win 7-6.
Caleb Shaffer started the third-inning rally with a single. Ryan Edwards singled. Edwards and Shaffer moved up on stolen bases, and then Shaffer scored on a sacrifice fly by Chase Collins. That put the Flyers on the scoreboard. They trailed 3-1.
Max Roberts singled to score Edwards. Curtis Lowe was hit by a pitch. After an RBI groundout by Colton Rash, Isaac Mahle hit an RBI double to give the Flyers the lead. Tim Finley drove Mahle in with an RBI single, and Shaffer capped the rally with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to make it 6-3.
Shaffer earned the win on the mound, going 5 1/3 innings, striking out six.
Edwards came in to get the final two outs and earn the save.
The Flyers earned the top seed in pool play on Saturday.
It started with Bronx Debert throwing a four-inning, complete game shutout. Debert did not walk a batter. The Flyers’ offense pounded out 10 hits and won 10-0.
Mahle was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, a double, four stolen bases and an RBI. Collins was 2-for-2 with two RBI, three stolen bases and a run scored.
The offense paced the Flyers to a 15-9 win in the second game of pool play. The Flyers stole 42 bases in the game. They had 13 hits, walked five times and were hit by four pitches.
Collins was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored and six stolen bases. Rash was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and seven stolen bases.
That win sent the Flyers to bracket play as the top seed.
In the semifinal, the Flyers jumped to a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Roberts was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Finley was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. He added four stolen bases.
Debert pitched four innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out six. Collins and Lowe finished the game to send the Flyers to the championship game.
On the weekend, Shaffer and Debert combined to throw more than 13 innings, striking out 13. Their combined strike percentage was 64 percent.
