14U team wins again!

With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the championship game and no outs, Tyler Schumacher dropped a bases loaded bunt down and new PF Flyer Donovan Corbett raced home. Corbett barely beat the throw, scoring the walkoff run against his old team and winning the 2022 CABA Wood Bat World Series on Sunday.

The win was PF Flyers 14U Edwards’ 50th of the season and earned the team its eighth tournament title.

The Flyers went 6-0 and outscored the competition 36-5 in the tournament.

Before the dramatic ending, the story of the weekend was the team’s pitching.

Three of the six games were shutouts and the Flyers did not allow more than 2 runs in a game during the entire tournament. The staff had a team ERA of 0.76 and a WHIP of 0.87.

Tommy Tahat pitched 9 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out nine. He started the championship game and allowed one earned run in 5 1/3 innings.

Rhys Canan, who pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout in the semifinal, pitched eight scoreless innings in the tournament. Canan earned two wins on the mound in the tournament and allowed only three hits while striking out five.

Caleb Driessen pitched in high leverage moments, earning the win in the championship game with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and the save in the Flyers 2-1 win against the Toronto Mets in pool play.

Brayden Schmittou threw five scoreless innings in pool play against the Cincinnati Future Stars, allowing only two hits in a rainy, soggy outing.

Schumacher pitched three scoreless innings in his start in pool play. Schumacher also was an offensive star. He hit .500 in the tournament with a team-high six RBI.

None of those RBI were more important than his bunt in the seventh inning of the championship game at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Miami University’s campus.

The game against the Flames was an epic pitcher’s duel. The Flyers took the lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Lucas Basta. The Flames took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth scoring one earned run and one unearned run.

The Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Bryce Eckert started a two-out rally with a hard ground ball single to center field. Luke Applegate singled next. Dane Dudley struck out, but hustled to first on the dropped third strike, keeping the inning alive. Eckert then scored on a wild pitch.

The Flames threatened in the top of the seventh. Driessen walked the leadoff batter, but Camden Tiemeier caught the runner off first with a backpick. One out later, the Flames doubled. But Driessen induced a ground ball to third to end the inning.

Corbett started the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Schmittou singled on a line drive to right, moving Corbett to third. After Schmittou stole second, the Flames intentionally walked Cameron Conn to load the bases for Schumacher, who delivered the game-winning bunt.

The Flyers are now 50-7-1. They return to action Wednesday in the Travel Baseball Rankings World Series.
