14U wins seventh tournament
PF Flyers 14U Edwards won its seventh tournament of the season, winning the Cincy Flames Summer Classic on Sunday at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Miami University’s campus.
The Flyers allowed only nine runs in going 5-0 in the tournament.
The team allowed only two runs in pool play with a 6-2 win to start against Elite Baseball and then shutouts in the other two pool play games.
Tommy Tahat and Bryce Eckert combined for a no-hit, 17-0 shutout on Thursday. And Dane Dudley pitched a six-inning, two-hit shutout against the Cincinnati Future Stars on Friday.
That secured the Flyers the top seed in bracket play.
The Future Stars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in bracket play. But Brayden Schmittou opened the bottom of the first with a triple, sparking a three-run rally to tie the score.
Caleb Driessen took over on the mound in the second inning and locked the Future Stars down. Driessen went six innings, allowing four hits and no runs, striking out six.
Meanwhile, the Flyers offense punched across two runs in the third inning on a two-run double by Eckert over the right fielder’s head. Those two runs were all Driessen needed and the Flyers held on to win 5-3.
In the championship, Rhys Canan retired Dugout Baseball 1-2-3 in the first inning with two strikeouts. The Flyers scored five runs in the bottom of the first. The big blow was a three-run, inside-the-park home run by Tahat.
Some stumbles on defense allowed Dugout to close the gap to 5-4, which is where the score remained until the bottom of the sixth.
Eckert singled to start the inning. Tahat laid down a perfect bunt for a hit and the third baseman threw the ball into right field, allowing Eckert to score. Two pitches later, Jack Phillabaum doubled on a line drive to center. Driessen followed that up with a two-run double to left. After a Camden Tiemeier single, Cameron Conn reached on an error.
Lucas Basta lined an RBI single to left to make the score 10-4.
Dudley then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Conn. The throw home got past the catcher. While the Dugout players scrambled for the ball, Basta realized no one was covering home and raced home to score run No. 12, ending the game 12-4.
In the championship game, Canan and Eckert combined to strike out 10 Dugout hitters in six innings. Canan earned the win, going four innings, allowing one earned run.
Offensively, Schmittou hit .455 in the tournament with a double and a triple. He scored nine runs and reached based 13 times in 19 plate appearances.
The Flyers are back in action this weekend in the Brick City Wood Bat Classic in Dayton.
