14U announces 2022 team awards

PF Flyers Edwards 14U announced the team’s 2022 team awards on Wednesday, honoring the top performers during this season.

Team MVP Brayden Schmittou

Most Valuable Player: #27 Brayden Schmittou was a major contributor in every facet of the game for the Flyers. Brayden led the team in a host of offensive stats, including batting average (.399), OPS (1.106), slugging percentage (.559), hits (75), doubles (18), triples (6), and led the team in runs scored with 84 runs in 69 games. He also played outstanding defense, mostly at third base but also at shortstop, second base and center field. On the mound, Brayden pitched 35 2/3 innings. He was 6-0 with a 1.96 ERA, 22 strikeouts, and gave up only 7 base on balls.

Cy Young Award winner Rhys Canan

Cy Young Award: #4 Rhys Canan led the Flyers with a 13-1 record in 26 appearances, had the most innings pitched on the team with 67 2/3, and led the team with 68 strikeouts. He often pitched against the best opponents and despite that posted a 2.38 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. On May 29, he pitched a five-inning, complete-game no-hitter against the Cincy Flames top team.

Most Improved Pitcher: #4 Rhys Canan transitioned to a pitcher-only role in May and focused exclusively on his craft. After making the switch to pitcher-only, Rhys had a 1.11 ERA in 44 innings pitched and a WHIP of 0.91. After July 1, he allowed only one run and only nine hits in 19 1/3 innings.

Most Improved Position Player Lucas Basta

Most Improved Position Player: #17 Lucas Basta has continued to improve and excel. In the last two years, he has trained extremely hard and transformed his body by losing significant body fat, and gaining muscle to become more athletic. Lucas transitioned from being mostly a catcher to one of the top shortstops in the State of Ohio. Lucas is an excellent baserunner, and led the Flyers with 44 stolen bases -- in 45 attempts. He often took extra bases with heads up hustle. He also led the team in home runs with two. He was second on the team in triples with five.

Ironman Award winner Camden Tiemeier

Ironman Award: #5 Camden Tiemeier not only played the most difficult position on the field, he did it with grit and passion. Camden was always there when his team needed him, and caught 290.2 of our 402.2 innings played from March through July. Even as physically and mentally demanding as that was, Camden called his own games behind the plate, and threw out a respectable 35.94% of base runners attempting to steal while also picking off 3 additional base runners.

PF Flyers Award winner Caleb Driessen

PF Flyers Award: #34 Caleb Driessen is quite simply one of the best teammates you will find anywhere. His affable personality sets his teammates at ease, even in difficult situations. He is supportive at all times, looks to help the team in any way possible, hustles on every play and plays the game with evident joy. In short, he makes the team better in everything he does.
