PF Flyers 15U wins second straight tournament

The PF Flyers 15U won the Past Time Xavier University All Prospect Elite tournament, going 6-0 in a 14-team tournament field.

Overall, the Flyers outscored their opponents 67-8 in the six games.

The Flyers went 4-0 in pool play, outscoring their opponents 42-4 to earn the top seed in the four-team bracket.

The Flyers started pool play on Thursday with a 12-3, come-from-behind win. The team scored seven in the fifth inning. They had four triples on the game. Leadoff man Carson Smith went 1-for-2 with a triple and three runs scored. Brayden Schmittou was 2-for-4 with two RBI. And Donovan Corbett was 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBI.

Luke Applegate pitched a three-hit shutout in an 11-0 win on Friday.

In the team’s second game on Friday, the Flyers were locked in a 1-1 tie after six innings.

Applegate led off the top of the seventh with a single. Corbett worked a walk. Xander Ervick then singled to put the Flyers up 2-1. Camden Tiemeier added another single on a bunt. Cameron Conn lined a single to center to make the score 4-1. Lucas Basta pulled off a perfect squeeze bunt to make the score 5-1. One out later, Schmittou hit an RBI triple and Ian Sukup hit a line drive single to make the score 7-1.

On Saturday, lefties Chris Yates and Dane Dudley combined for a two-hit shutout. The offense scored 12 runs on nine hits, led by Ervick, who was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

In bracket play, Schmittou pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Dane Dudley went 2-for-2 with two RBI to lead the offense to an 11-1 win.

That sent the Flyers to the championship game.

The other team scored an unearned run in the top of the first, but Applegate hit a two-out, two-run single to put the Flyers up 2-1 in the bottom of the first. The Flyers added a run in the second when Smith scored on a wild pitch. Tiemeier added on in the third when he smoked a triple to the gap and came around to score on the same play on an error. That made it 5-1.

The Flyers ended the game in the bottom of the fourth.

Smith was once again the catalyst. He led off with a bunt single. Schmittou walked. Dudley singled on a line drive to center. Ervick walked to score a run. Applegate then tripled to unload the bases. He later scored on a wild pitch. Finally, Smith, who started the inning, singled on a line drive to center. The ball got under the center fielder’s glove and went to the fence and Smith came all the way around to score to give the Flyers the 14-3 win.

Dudley hit .600 on the tournament with a double and 5 RBI. Appelgate hit .357 with a triple and 7 RBI. Corbett and Smith both hit .462. The team hit .402 in the tournament and reached base more than 50 percent of the time.

On the mound, Schmittou pitched six innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Dudley pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out six. And Rhys Canan pitched 4 1/3, allowing one earned run and striking out six.

The Flyers are now 10-0.

They return to action on Thursday in the Midwest Prospect League in Indianapolis.
