PF Flyers American 13U wins highly competitive tourney
PF Flyers American 13U used an eight-run fifth inning for a come-from-behind 11-10 win against the top-ranked team in the state of Ohio. That earned the Flyers the championship in Gold Ring Championship at Action Sports Center.
Trailing 10-3, Brayden Hornsby led off the top of the fifth with a walk. One out later, Lincoln Heim singled before Logan Walters and Connor Bitler walked. That plated one run. Cooper Berlin hit a two-run single to make the score 10-6.
After a strikeout, Eli Greenlee and Parker Kuhr walked. Then Thomas Gruber hit a game-tying three-run triple. Two pitches later, he scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Heim struck out the side in the bottom half of the fifth to earn the win and the championship.
The Flyers faced a tough path on Sunday in bracket play, first beating the No. 18 team in Ohio 9-1. Berlin was 2-for-2 in that game with a home run and two RBI.
In the semifinal, the Flyers trailed 4-3 heading into the fifth inning. But the Flyers scored three times in the inning with RBI singles by Caden Higginbotham and Heim to take a 5-4 lead. The Flyers finished the game with a 7-5 win over the No. 26 team in Ohio.
The Flyers went 1-1 in pool play on Saturday with a 15-9 loss to Encore Select, the top team in Ohio.
The Flyers are now 7-1-1 with two tournament championships.
