PF Flyers 16U wins second tournament of the fall
The PF Flyers 16U team won its second straight tournament at Grand Park Sports Campus on Sunday, winning the Bullpen Oktoberfest tournament.
The Flyers won five games to improve their fall record to 9-0. The Flyers outscored their opponents 45-6.
The Flyers went 2-0 in pool play to earn the second seed on Sunday.
In the first game on Saturday, Camden Tiemeier hit a two-out, two-run single to break a 1-1 tie. One pitch later, Brayden Schmittou scored on a passed ball to make the score 4-1. The Flyers added five more runs and pitcher Hunter Kelly went 3 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs to earn the win on the mound.
The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Tiemeier doubled to score Schmittou and then scored on a double steal.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tahat and Ian Sukup combined for a shutout with Sukup going 5 1/3 innings, allowing only four hits.
In the first game on Sunday, the Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 lead and added three more in the second to provide more than enough offense for Schmittou. He threw a six-inning complete game shutout, striking out four.
Lucas Basta was the offensive star in the semifinal. He led off the bottom of the first with a single and eventually scored to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead. He went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and five RBI. Carson Smith went 2-for-2 with a triple and three runs scored. Cameron Conn went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
The Flyers pounded out 13 hits and 12 runs. Meanwhile, Rhys Canan pitched a four-inning complete game, striking out three and giving up two runs to earn the win.
The bats stayed hot in the championship with a 10-run third inning. Basta went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Dane Dudley went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and three RBI. Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a triple.
Tahat threw a four-inning complete game shutout.
Sukup threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in the tournament. Schmittou threw 6. Tahat threw 5 2/3.
At the plate, Basta hit .615 with a triple. He led the team with nine runs scored and nine RBI. Dudley hit .538 with two triples and a home run. Schmittou hit .500.
