PF Flyers 10U caps fall with first tournament win
The PF Flyers 10U team capped a successful fall season by winning the Monster Mash tournament at Grand Park on Sunday.
The Flyers outscored their opponents 58-26 on the weekend, averaging more than 14 runs per game.
In Sunday’s championship game, the Flyers fell behind 7-0 after the top of the first inning. But the boys battled back and outscored their opponent 16-1 from that point on.
The Flyers’ big inning came in the second, when they scored eight runs to take a 9-8 lead.
Max Roberts led the inning off with a double. Tim Finley and Carter Cassady hit RBI singles. One out and two walks later, Ryan Edwards hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-6. After Edwards stole second and third, he scored on a single by Colton Rash, who stole second and third and scored on a ground out by Curtis Lowe to tie the game. Chase Collins singled and then stole second, third and home to give the Flyers the lead, 9-8.
The Flyers added two more runs in the third and then scored five in the fourth to reach the run-rule at 16-8.
The final, walkoff run scored after Roberts hit an RBI single to make the score 15-8. Roberts stole second and third before being lifted for pinch runner Steely Edwards. The 6-year-old took an aggressive secondary lead off third, baiting the catcher into a throw back to third. Steely Edwards got back to the bag safely. The next pitch, the catcher threw to third again, but the ball got past the third baseman, allowing Steely Edwards to score and ending the game, 16-8.
Finley got the win on the mound, going 2 1/3 innings allowing only two hits and one run.
The Flyers earned the No. 2 seed in pool play, going 2-0 behind a potent offense.
The Flyers won the first game 19-12. Collins was the offensive star, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and 4 RBI. He only needed a home run for the cycle. Lowe went 3-for-4 with 6 RBI and a triple. Ryan and Steely Edwards each went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Lowe and Ryan Edwards each pitched a scoreless inning.
The Flyers won the second pool play game 14-5, allowing only three hits.
Ryan Edwards, Rash, Lowe, Collins and Finley each had two hits. Bronx Debert was 1-for-1 with a triple and three RBI.
In bracket play, Ryan Edwards pitched three innings, allowing only two hits and one run with three strikeouts. Debert finished the game by striking out three in a scoreless inning.
Rash paced the offense. He went 3-for-3 with a double. Lowe went 2-for-2 with a double. Collins went 2-for-2 with three RBI.
That brought the Flyers to the championship game and their come-from-behind win.
The Flyers finished the fall season 14-5.
