PF Flyers 13U wins fourth tournament
The PF Flyers 13U used a potent offense to propel the team to its fourth tournament win of the season on Sunday.
The Flyers won the Tournaments for a Cause Hits for Heroes tournament, outscoring their opponents 54-10.
The Flyers hit .490 on the tournament, led by Corwin Wang who hit .636 with a double, two triples and a home run.
Joe Cafferky hit .700 in the team’s four games with three doubles, a triple and 6 RBI.
The Flyers started the tournament on Saturday with a 26-4 win, powered by a 19-run third inning. The team then got another run-rule in the second game of pool play, winning 10-2 to secure the top seed heading into bracket play.
Carter Stone took the mound in the semifinal game. He pitched out of trouble several times and managed to throw four shutout innings, thanks in part to two outfield assists by Carson Tabler to cut down a runner at home and later another trying to advance to third.
Meanwhile, Wang led the bottom of the first off with a triple and later scored. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Dan Cafferky worked a leadoff walk. Tabler followed the walk up with an RBI triple. Then Joe Cafferky and Rudy Glotfelty hit RBI doubles. Glotfelty later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0. The Flyers held on to win 9-3 and head to the championship.
Joe Cafferky walked the first two batters and then gave up a single to load the bases in the top of the first. Then he nearly pitched his way out of it with a fielder’s choice to third baseman Carter Stone who got the out at home and the Flyers caught a runner trying to score on a wild pitch. But the next pitch also got to the backstop allowing a run to score to make it 1-0. Joe Cafferky struck the hitter out to end the inning. That would be the only run he allowed in four innings.
In the bottom of the first, Wang singled to start the inning, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Cafferky.
The score stayed tied until the bottom of the third when Wang hit an RBI triple. Rutherford singled Wang in. The Flyers went on to score four more runs in the inning to make it 7-1.
The Flyers scored two more in the bottom of the fifth to end the game 9-1.
The Flyers are now 27-8-1. They play again on Wednesday evening.
