PF Flyers 13U wins first tournament of the season

PF Flyers 13U Canan won its first tournament of the season, the Tournaments for a Cause Fight for the Flag this weekend, outscoring their opponents 40-4 in four games.

On their way to the tournament win, the Flyers beat two teams ranked in the top 25 in the state of Ohio.

The Flyers executed the entire weekend on the mound, on offense, on defense and on the basepaths.

In the championship game, the opposing team started the game with a line drive down the right field line. Wes Canan made a fantastic running play to cut the ball off and hold the leadoff man to a single. That proved pivotal when the next hitter lined a double into the gap. A perfect relay kept the run from scoring, but now the visitors had runners on second and third and no outs.

Catcher Gavin Rutherford showed tremendous leadership by going to the mound to talk to pitcher Joe Cafferky. It was time to tweak the game plan and mix in more offspeed pitches.

The result was Cafferky struck out the next two hitters and induced a ground out to third to end the inning with no runs scored. The only hit he allowed in his final three innings on the mound was an infield single.

Alex Madrigal

In the bottom of the first, Carson Tabler led off with a line drive single to left. After two walks, Alex Madrigal cleared the bases with a triple to put the Flyers up 3-0.

The Flyers added on in every inning before Jack Andolina grounded an RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 9-1 win.

Madrigal was the offensive star during the tournament. He went 9-for-10 with three doubles, three triples and a home run. He had seven RBI, seven runs scored and three stolen bases. He also pitched a scoreless inning and played incredible defense at third base.

Rudy Glotfelty was 7-for-10 with two doubles and a triple, and Dan Cafferky was 4-for-7 with two triples.

Overall, the Flyers pitching staff was outstanding. Nine different pitchers took the mound and the team ERA was 1.40. The opposition hit just .227. Joe Cafferky led the team on the mound with five scoreless innings and eight strikeouts. As a team, the Flyers struck out 30 hitters in 20 innings.

The Flyers are now 6-2-1. They’re back in action next weekend in the Tournaments for a Cause Cincinnati Shootout.
