PF Flyers 10U scores three in the final inning to win tourney championship
Tied 4-4 in the sixth inning, the PF Flyers 10U erupted for three runs to win the Kings Mid Summer Classic, the team’s third tournament championship of 2024.
Chase Collins had the big blow in the sixth, a triple to center field and then slammed the door on the mound in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 7-4 win.
Bronx Debert led the sixth inning off with a single and then stole second, third and home to give the Flyers a 5-4 lead. Ryan Edwards walked and scored on Collins’ triple. Two outs later, Carter Cassady singled Collins home.
Edwards pitched four innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs while striking out five. He also was 1-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Max Roberts was 2-for-3 in the championship with a triple.
The championship game was the Flyers’ third game of the day.
The Flyers started bracket play by pounding out 11 hits and 12 runs in a 12-2 win. Caleb Shaffer pitched a four-inning complete game. He allowed three hits and two runs while striking out seven. He was also 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and two RBI. Curtis Lowe was 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Flyers advanced to the semifinal, where they quickly jumped to a 5-0 lead. Collins, Roberts, Lowe and Cassady strung together four straight singles to plate three runs. One out later Colton Rash singled Cassady home and after an infield single by Shaffer, Isaac Mahle singled to make it 5-0.
The Flyers held on in the bottom of the sixth with Debert striking out the final hitter with the tying run at second. Debert pitched six innings, allowing only three earned runs in the 8-7 win.
That sent the Flyers to the championship.
The Flyers started pool play with a 15-0 win. Roberts and Mahle combined for a four-inning no-hitter, striking out five. Collins and Roberts were both 3-for-3. The Flyers had 11 hits.
The Flyers earned a tie in the team’s second pool play game. The Flyers trailed 5-1 in the top of the sixth before scoring eight runs to take a 9-5 lead. Their opponent rallied for four in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.
Tim Finley had the big blow in the eight-run sixth inning with a game-tying two-run double.
The Flyers are now 21-7-2.
